The Eternal Question
To determine who is the best player to have played a given sport, the indicators are as subjective as they are numerous. They can range from the athlete's legacy in the sport, his impact on his team's performance, the individual and collective honors he has accumulated, or the gap between the performance of the player in question and that of others of his era. However, there's no shortage of statistics and indicators when it comes to deciding which athlete currently dominates his sport.
Only success can judge whether a player belongs to the elite of his sport.
In a Class of His Own
In this category, it would be unthinkable not to mention the candidacy of Aaron Judge, outfielder for the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball, the MLB. Currently, as of July 24, 2024, the 6'7” colossus from Linden, California, has a .310 batting average, 35 home runs, and 89 RBIs, and leads the league in OPS (a player's ability to get on base and hit for power, two important offensive skills).
Judge also equaled a record reached only twice in MLB history, having amassed 33 home runs before the All-Star break. This impressive feat was achieved by Roger Maris, also of the Yankees, in 1961, and the feat was repeated in 2022...
By Aaron Judge!
To say that his place in the same Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 16, 2024 was fully deserved would be an understatement. The duel was won five to three by the American League representatives.
The proof is in the pudding
No one can predict what the rest of the season will be like for the “Bronx Bombers”, but one thing is certain: as long as they can count on their power hitter who pushes the limits of excellence every year, the former team of Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Derek Jeter, Lou Gehrig, Reggie Jackson, Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, and Alex Rodriguez will have a chance to win.
But why?
Because Aaron Judge has six All-Star titles, an American League MVP award, two first-team All-Star berths, a Rookie of the Year award, an Al Hank Aaron Award for the best hitter in his division, a Roberto Clemente Award for the player who best embodies baseball, sportsmanship, and community involvement, and tons more. However, the man who seems assured of a place in Cooperstown, home of Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame, still lacks the big trophy, the one awarded at the end of the World Series.
A History Yet to Be Written
Will this be the year when he can add the most important trophy to all the others he has won over the years?
There's only one way to find out: Play ball!
