Kristopher Letang: When giving up isn't an option.

A tribute painting of Kris Letang created by artist Eric Sevigny commissioned by a customer.

A bit of stability in the eye of the hurricane

At a time when everything in the world is evolving and changing at breakneck speed, it's important to be able to rely on a few landmarks. One such beacon is Kris Letang, a defenseman for the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Never too old to break records

On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and their team took on the New York Islanders. The 36-year-old defenseman from Quebec made history by becoming the first defenseman in NHL history to score five points in a single period. The last forward to record five assists in one period was Dale Hawerchuk in 1984. Letang also became the first defenseman since Sheldon Souray to score six points in a game. Souray achieved this impressive feat in 2004 against the very same Penguins.

The athlete seen in Hyundai car commercials broke another record at the start of the 2023-2024 season when, along with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, the three players began their 18th season together since Letang's NHL debut. Letang, who throughout his prolific career has had to recover from two strokes, was drafted in 2005 by the same Pennsylvania team with whom he has played every game since, having previously played his entire junior career with the Foreurs de Val-d'Or.

From the Val-d'Or Foreurs to the Pittsburgh Penguins to...

There are rumors that Kris Letang could be traded to the Montreal Canadiens; he has been with the Pittsburgh Penguins since the very beginning of his professional career. His captain, Sidney Crosby, hopes his teammate will continue to play with him. He told The Athletic that it would be incredible if Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin could finish their careers in Pittsburgh.

Since being drafted, he has continued to confound the doubters and silence the cynics. And yet, the man, against whom even his health has been stubborn, is strutting his stuff with three Stanley Cup rings. His latest feat implies only one implacable truth:

The Quebec athlete has not finished shining, and no one should count him out, because this is precisely the moment he likes to show off his great talent and break records.

You have been warned...
